The new Toronto International Latin Film Festival 2003 is programmed by Raúl Galvez– former Director/Programmer of Sí-Sí-Cine- and responsible for bringing to the city some of the best Spanish language films for the past seven years. The festival also opens up to a broader Latin audience and Brazil will be permanent featured. Italy will be our first guest country this year with one Italian Classic film. Other countries such as Portugal and France will be presented in subsequent years. Almost all of the festival’s films are Canadian premieres and you probably won’t be able to see them again in Toronto. The Toronto International Latin Film Festival 2003 presents Spanish and Latin films from around the world to Canadians. We present a festival of Latin films which have universal appeal and that can be enjoyed by Spanish/Portuguese/Italian speakers, lovers of Latin culture and Canadian film lovers at large. All films are subtitled in English* We select films on the basis of artistic merit and promote the festival, in Spanish, English, Portuguese, Italian and French, through all media to as wide a film-loving audience as possible. With the support of the Toronto-based Spanish and Brazilian Consulates, we present a selection of films from Argentina, Brazil, Cuba, Colombia, Chile, Italy, Mexico, Peru, Spain, United States, Uruguay, Venezuela and elsewhere. TILFF chooses an invited Latin country every year. This year our guest will be Italy, a country that from now on will be a regular in the Festival. Next year it will be Portugal’s turn followed by France in a rotating manner. DIRECTOR'S MESSAGE Dear lovers of Latin cinema,  Thank you for all the support and encouraging letters sent to me during the past six years as director-programmer of Sí-Sí-Cine. With the new festival TILFF 2003, we are expanding our reach while still offering the good cinema we all like to see. This means enlarging the concept of “Latin”. Beside the Spanish-speaking countries, from now on, Brazil will be present in our festival as well as Italy, Portugal and France, which will rotate as guest countries. Latin culture, something of which films form a vital part, is much more than “Latin Vibrations” or the commercial spots on the radio. The Latin world is an international reality, ever growing, whose roots go back hundreds of years in Europe and Latin America. Two essential elements define it: religion and language. The religion is Christian, and the language from all these countries derive from Latin. It is true that we are all different –even between countrymen- but there is a certain view of the world, a certain character, a behavior, a human warmth, easily recognizable as “Latin”. What do a Spaniard and a Brazilian have in common? Or an Italian and a Colombian? Overall, there is a certain joy of living and a capacity for spontaneous celebration. This festival wants to be part of that celebration and provide one more vehicle to unite us. Raúl Gálvez Director • • • • • Queridos amigos del cine latino, antes que nada, muchísimas gracias por el sostén y las cartas de apoyo recibidos durante estos últimos seis años como director-programador de Sí-Sí-Cine. Con el nuevo festival TILFF 2003, queremos expandir las bases para seguir ofreciendo en Toronto el buen cine que todos queremos ver. Expandir las bases no significa otra cosa que amplificar el concepto de lo latino. Además de los países de habla hispana, de ahora en más, Brasil estará presente en nuestro festival como asimismo Italia, Portugal y Francia, que rotarán todos los años como países invitados. La cultura latina, algo de lo que el cine es parte vital, es mucho más que la idea de “latin vibrations” o la musiquita comercial de la radio. El mundo latino es una realidad internacional, cada vez mayor, cuyas raíces están presentes desde cientos de años atrás en Europa y en América….latina. Dos elementos esenciales lo definen: religión y lengua. En cuanto a la religión, es cristiana, y la lengua, pertenece a los países cuyos idiomas derivan del latín. Y si bien todos somos distintos –aún los que somos compatriotas-, es cierto que hay un modo de ver el mundo, un cierto carácter, un comportamiento, una calidez humana, facilmente reconocible como “lo latino”. ¿En qué se parece un español a un brasileño o un italiano a un colombiano? Aparentemente, en muy poco. Pero hay una cierta alegría de vivir, un cierta capacidad para la celebración espontánea, que es propia de esta cultura. Este festival de cine quiere ser parte de esa celebración y un vehículo más de todas las cosas que nos unen. To hold a film festival for lovers of the Spanish/Portuguese/Italian languages as well as native speakers of those idioms by providing English subtitled prints. To promote the Festival in the English as well as the Spanish, French, Portuguese, and Italian media in Toronto to as wide a film-loving audience as possible. OUR AUDIENCE Toronto International Latin Film Festival 2003 (TILFF) audience is educated and inquiring and has a special interest in Spanish/Brazilian/European Latin culture, due to tourism, and/or a love of the cinema, literature, music and the arts. Attended by a wide cross section of Toronto's population, the Festival naturally appeals to the native Spanish/Portuguese/Italian speaker as well as the educated Hispanophile. There are more than 800.000 Spanish-speaking people in Canada –more than 250.000 in Toronto- and the numbers keeps growing. There are more than 2.000.000 Canadians who speak Spanish. And they keep learning. Free Trade with Mexico and other Latin American countries obviously stimulates all this. In the States there are 40.000.000 Spanish-speaking people! No doubt we are heading to a bi-lingual continent. Given the support of all the consuls representing Spanish and Latin American speaking countries, this not-for-profit film festival achieves great reach and an ever-growing prestige in the Canadian media and audience. TORONTO INTERNATIONAL LATIN FILM FESTIVAL PROGRAMMING For the past seven years, Canadian/Argentinean Film Festival Director Raúl Gálvez has been one of Canada’s most respected Spanish language film programmers, and has won with his festivals the hearts of Toronto’s enthusiastic film going community. A writer and filmmaker in his own right, he has built up a rich network of contacts throughout the Spanish and Latin world and sees the new TILFF 2003 Festival ready to take off from a bigger platform.
